A Greater Witness

John 5:36

But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

Jesus said, I have greater witness than that of John. John the Baptist was a witness for Christ, but Jesus had a greater witness than John. The people heard John the Baptist preach about Christ coming, for he was the forerunner of Christ. However, Jesus made it very clear that he had a greater witness than John the Baptist, and that witness was the works that he performed.

However, what witness do we have to show to those around us that the works we do are the works of God? A witness is someone or something that testifies that what we are doing is real. If we learn that we have a greater witness than ourselves, then the works that we do will make an impact on those around us. We can talk about ourselves, but that will seem self-promoting. God gives us three things as a believer that will testify as our witness. Let me share these three things with you.

First, you have God's Word as a greater witness. The greatest thing that I can do as a believer is to obey God’s Word. It is God's Word that will testify that the works that I do are of God. People cannot deny that what we are doing are the works that the Scriptures command us to do. You see, it is the power of the Scriptures that will change the lives of those that you speak the Word of God to. Let God's Word be your greater witness by speaking it, spreading it, and letting it do the work in the hearts of those that you are trying to win to Christ or trying to help.

Second, you have the Holy Spirit as a greater witness. Jesus says in John 14:12, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. Jesus promised to give us the Holy Spirit so that we can do greater works. It is the Holy Spirit working through our lives to do greater works that will testify that what we are doing is of God.

Third, your works are a greater witness. People may not like what we say or believe, but they cannot deny the works that are going on in our lives and ministries. One reason we must do great works for God is so that people can see that God is still God, and that He can do great works today as He has done in the past. It is the greater works that God does through our lives that testify that God is working through us. People may not like us, but they will never be able to deny the works that are going on through our lives if we allow God to do those great works by faith.

My friend, you have a greater witness in God's Word, in His Holy Spirit, and in the works you do. You have a choice: you can brag about who you are, or you can let the greater witness testify of the work being done through your life. The only way that greater works can testify of God working through you is if you step up and do the works of the Scriptures through the power of the Holy Spirit. When all is said and done, the works that the Holy Spirit does through your life will be a greater witness than anything you can say about yourself. People cannot deny the works God does through your life when they are evident. Stop testifying of yourself and let the works you do through the power of the Holy Spirit testify for you, for they will testify for you that you are doing God's work.
