An Impossible Research

Job 37:23

Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

One of the greatest statements made in the book of Job was made by Elihu as he talks to Job. He says that we cannot find out the Almighty. What does he mean by this statement? He is saying that you will never be able to figure God out completely. He is saying that God is too big for any human to understand God’s omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. He is saying that when you think you have figured God out, you will quickly realize there is much more to God than what you have just learned.

There is something comforting about this statement that can help any believer going through tough times. The fact that I cannot find out everything about God comforts me that I have a God bigger than any situation I face. I am humored by people who think they are so smart that they can explain God, and yet their explanation leaves question as to the greatness of God. We try to explain the trinity of the Godhead, and yet every explanation falls short. We try to explain the majesty of God, and yet the picture we paint is like a stick picture. Let me point out several things you will never discover about God.

First, you will never find out the love of God. John 3:16 says about God’s love, For God so loved the world…. Even God could not put into words the greatness of His love. When you think you have God’s love figured out, you will then discover His love in a different way. His love is greater than the love of all relationships put together. God’s love is so great that no library could contain the books that could be written about His love. God’s love is so great that you cannot go so deep that His love cannot reach you. You could take God’s love and measure the east from the west, if it were possible to measure the east from the west, and yet God’s love would surpass that measurement.

Second, you will never find out God’s mercy. God’s mercies are new every morning. The fact that we are such sinners and God shows His mercy despite our sinfulness only reveals that you will never find out the mercy of God. I am thankful that my God’s mercy is greater than our propensity to sin. If it were not for the greatness of God’s mercy, we all would be headed for Hell.

Third, you will never find out God’s longsuffering. I am thankful that God has never given up on any person. He never gives us on trying to save the lost, and He never gives up on trying to bring His child back to Him. God’s longsuffering is so great that He will hold out hope that one day the perpetual backslider will come back to Him, even if it is at the end of the backslider’s life. One thing you can be assured of is that God’s longsuffering will never run out.

Fourth, you will never find out God’s grace. The greatness of God’s grace is that He is willing to take broken sinners and use them for His service. The grace of God is so great that there is never a sin that anyone can do that would hinder God from using them again in some way. Oh, people may say someone cannot be used again, but I am thankful for the grace of God that is greater than our sin.

My friend, don't waste the greatness of God. We may never find out the Almighty in these areas, but we must let the greatness of these attributes motivate us to do right.
