1 Samuel 25:28
I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
When Abigail came to David to beg for forgiveness and mercy, she made a great statement to him that came to pass. She said the LORD would make David a sure house. The word sure means stable, reliable, and unwavering. In other words, David built a solid life that could withstand the storms that life would bring against him by fighting the battles of the LORD. David certainly faced many storms in his life, but he always weathered the storms that came his way.
What was it that caused David to build a sure house? One phrase gives the answer: because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD. David’s life was not about himself, but it was about doing right and fighting any battle that came against the LORD. He started fighting these battles as a youth when Goliath defied the armies of God, and David took up the cause of fighting against Goliath who defied his God. The only time David chose not to fight the LORD’s battles was when he found himself surrendering to sin with Bathsheba, and that one time brought unsteadiness to his life. The only thing that turned this instability in his life around was to go back to fighting the battles of the LORD.
My friend, you will never build a sure life by living for your pleasures, dreams, and desires. Many are more concerned with themselves and trying to build a sure life for themselves, only to find that their lives are filled with heartache, trouble, and regret at the end of life. You cannot live for self and find the steadiness of life for which you seek. You must build your life on Jesus Christ if you want to find a steady life that can weather any storm that life throws at you.
Now, having a sure house does not mean you won't fight battles; rather, you will fight battles, but the battles won’t shake your life. You will notice what brought David to having a sure house was that he fought the battles of the LORD. When you get busy doing the LORD’s work, God will give you a stable life that can weather any of life’s storms. You must stop worrying about your life and stay busy fighting the battles of the LORD to have a sure life.
Let me apply this to your life. A steady home is a home where the family stays busy fighting the battles of the LORD. If you don't fight the battles of the LORD, you will turn to fighting each other. Many marriages are filled with strife because they have turned their energies to fighting each other. You will fight something or someone; therefore, it is better to turn your energies to fighting the battles of the LORD so that your marriage and home become stronger as you fight together for a common cause.
Moreover, a life that fights the battles of the LORD will be a sure life that can weather any storm. God will take care of the cares of your life if you will stay busy fighting the battles of the LORD. God will meet your needs when you stay focused on fighting the battles of the LORD.
The key is to get busy serving the LORD. Whether it is a ministry, individual, or a family, when you get busy serving the LORD and building your life on the sure foundation of Christ, you will find you can weather any storm that life throws at you because a sure house is the result of fighting the battles of the LORD.
