Leviticus 24:5

And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

When the priests made the bread for the tabernacle in the wilderness, they were to make the bread with fine flour. God could have given the instruction to just use flour, but He chose to tell them to use fine flour. In order for that flour to become fine, they had to sift that flour through a sieve to bring it to a fine powder. Once the flour was sifted through the sieve, there was a consistent powder that they could use to make this bread.

The key to this truth is that God desires His children to be consistent in life. Inconsistency is one of the greatest hindrances to the work of Christ. It is the inconsistency of believers that keeps the church from growing. Throughout my ministry, I have watched people jump in and out many times, only to hurt the ministry that is depending on them and the cause of Christ. Let me give several observations about consistency and its importance to your life and the church.

First, you choose to be consistent. Just like a person chooses to be inconsistent, you can choose to be consistent. Nobody can make you to be consistent, but you must make that choice to be consistent.

Second, consistency is what makes strong Christians. There is a difference between being a believer and a Christian. A Christian is Christlike, whereas a believer is simply someone who is saved. There are many believers, but few Christians. The reason there are so few Christians is because there are very few people who are consistent in their walk with Christ. You will only become strong in your walk with Christ by daily reading God’s Word, praying, and doing what you are supposed to do. If you are inconsistent in your daily walk with Christ, you will find yourself not being what Christ needs you to be to help others.

Third, consistency helps to build great churches. If the believers in a church are inconsistent, it weakens the ability of that church to reach its community for Christ as it could if it had consistent believers. Great churches have consistent Christians; consistent in walking with God, soul winning, and serving Christ week in and week out.

Fourth, consistency is what helps you to build the lives of others. You cannot build lives when you are inconsistent in your ministry. People need to see you show up all the time. You can tell people to be faithful to church and to be consistent in their lives, but if your life shows inconsistency, your message is a mere noise to those who hear it. The best way to build strong believers is for you to be consistent in your own life. Consistency always speaks louder than words will ever speak.

Fifth, consistency is achieved by doing right by duty. If it were easy to be consistent, everyone would do it. However, consistency is doing right when you are tired and don't feel like doing it. Consistency is showing up when you are a bit sick, but you must show up because people are depending on you being there. Consistency is waking up every morning and reading God’s Word and praying despite being extremely tired. Consistency is going soul winning when your really don't feel like it, but you go because it is the right thing to do. You can be consistent because it is a choice, but you will only achieve it by doing right by duty.
