Romans 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

One of the most misdefined words that believers often use is the word commendeth. Many say this word means to show. In other words, they will say that God showed His love toward us. It is true that God showed His love toward us, but this is not what this word means. You must look at the root word in the word commendeth to understand this word. The root word is commend. This word truly shows what this verse means for the lost and the saved. Let me share what this word means and how it applies to your life.

First, to commend something or someone means to recommend them. God recommends His love toward us. In other words, God is saying that His love toward us is His recommendation for salvation. To recommend is God’s prescription for salvation. When a doctor recommends a medicine, he prescribes it for the patient to get better. Now, the patient has a choice of whether to take it or not, but the doctor’s recommendation is the only way the patient will get better. Likewise, God’s recommendation of His love is His prescription for salvation. God is saying that He prescribes His love for you to get saved.

Second, to commend means to endorse. To endorse something or someone is to give your full approval and backing. God endorses His love and gives His full approval and backing as the only way to get saved. God does not approve of anything else for salvation; He only endorses His love toward us as the way to get saved.

Third, to commend means to deliver. God delivered His love toward us. Who is God’s love that He delivered? John 3:16 tells us, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The love of God is His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. God delivered Jesus Christ to us to pay for our sins. The reason God endorses or commends His love toward us is that Christ is the only payment for sin.

Now, there is a key to this word that we must not ignore. God says that He commendeth His love. Notice the -eth at the end of this word. This suffix means it continues or it never ends. This means that God’s recommendation or endorsement of His love toward us is as relevant today as it was in the initial giving of His love.

My friend, if you are lost, God commendeth His love toward us because that is the only way to get saved. There is no other way for sins to be paid other than Jesus Christ. If you want to make it to Heaven, you must accept God’s commendation of His love and payment if you want to be saved.

Moreover, God commendeth His love toward the believer as well. Jesus Christ is still God the Father’s recommendation for whom you should live for. There is no other person you should live for other than Jesus Christ. Any person you live to please, including yourself, will always leave you empty; whereas, living for Christ is where true fulfillment in life is found. You will never truly know the love of God and its magnitude until you live for Christ. The longer you serve Christ, the more you will discover His love and that no one loves you like Christ.
