God's Original Purpose for Man

Genesis 2:5

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

Whenever you are looking for God's original purpose, you must always start in the book of Genesis. God shows His original purpose for creating man, and anything outside of that purpose always leads to strife and discontent with others and with yourself. Most often, strife and discontent are a result of a person who is not completely obeying God's intended purpose for them. Therefore, if we are to find purpose in life, we must fulfill God's purpose in our lives. Let me share seven purposes for which God created man.

First, God intended for man to work. In verse 5, God showed that He intended for man to till the ground. No man will be happy or will find purpose unless he is working. God did not make man to sit at home; He made man to work. Every man who does not fulfill this purpose will find himself in trouble or in sin. Man will always find a purpose when he is working as God commanded him to do.

Second, God intended for man to be saved. In verse 7, man became a living soul. No man will find the complete purpose for which he was created without accepting Christ as their personal Saviour, for it is only through Christ that man can become a living soul again.

Third, God intended for a man to live in His Will. In verse 8, God’s Will for Adam was to live in the Garden of Eden. You can do whatever you want to in life, but you will never find true purpose in your life until you live in God's will, that for which he made you to do on this earth.

Fourth, God intended for man to guard what He has given him to do. In verse 15, God told man to keep the ground. The word keep means to guard. Man is to be the guardian of what God gives him to do, which means that man is to be the guardian of his family and his ministry. When a man leaves his responsibility of being the guardian, sin will find its way into man’s life.

Fifth, God intended for man to completely obey Him. In verses 16-17, God told Adam that he could eat of any tree, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It did not matter if Adam understood why God said this; it was the fact that God told him to do it, and he was to obey it. You don't have to understand why God tells you to do something; you are simply to obey what He tells you to do. You may never understand why God tells you to do something, but complete obedience to what God tells you to do is where you will find God's purpose for your life.

Sixth, God intended for man to be a decision-maker. In verse 19, God gave Adam the responsibility of deciding the names of the animals. It does not matter if you don't like making decisions; as a man, you are to be the one to make the final decisions in your area of responsibility.

Seventh, God intended for man to be the leader in the home. God made man first, and then he created Eve. The purpose for life starts in the home, and if man does not obey God's command to be the leader of his home, he will never find purpose in life in any other area. If men will lead in their home, that will develop purpose in every other area of their lives.
