Hindrances to Mighty Works

Mark 6:5

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

The mighty works of God can be done in any generation, but sadly, they are not being done, not because God won't do it, but because His people won't do what it takes to see those mighty works. It is sad that Jesus could do no mighty work in His hometown, not because He did not have the power to do it or the desire for it to be done, but because the people were the hindrance to God doing the mighty works.

The reason we don't have mighty works today is not because God lacks the power or the will to do them, but because His people are the hindrance to them being done. We could see God's mighty works done today if we removed the hindrances that keep Him from doing them. Let me share six hindrances that keep God from doing mighty works today.

First, unbelief is a hindrance to mighty works. A lack of faith will squelch God’s ability to do any great work today. If you let your negative spirit say that it can't be done, it will stop God from doing what He wants. You must have faith that God can still do mighty works for those works to be done.

Second, a lack of laborers is a hindrance to mighty works. Jesus bemoaned the fact that there are a lack of laborers in His harvest. The lack of laborers is not because God has not provided them, but because those in the church refuse to grow or get involved to become laborers in the harvest. I would hate to think that my lack of involvement keeps God from doing mighty works in my church. Always remember that the more people there are doing the work of God, the greater the chance we have of seeing God's mighty works today.

Third, the lack of publishing is a hindrance to mighty works. In Mark 7:36, a man who Jesus healed published everywhere that Jesus healed him, and it resulted in many more people coming to Christ. The greatest advertising agent for a church are God’s people publishing abroad the great works of God being done in their church. We could see more mighty works done if the church published everywhere what God is doing. The lost cannot get saved if they don't show up at church, so someone needs to publish what God is doing so that the lost will come and be saved.

Fourth, fault-finders are a hindrance to mighty works. In Mark 7:2, the fault-finders came out against Jesus trying to find a reason to criticize. Fault-finders have stopped many mighty works from being done because they take the focus off God doing something, and put it on what they consider a fault they think needs to be pointed out.

Fifth, a lack of organization is a hindrance to mighty works. Mighty works are hindered by the disorganization of the work being done. Jesus did many mighty works because everything He did was organized, and His organization enabled Him to accomplish the greatest work in each place.

Sixth, no power is a hindrance to mighty works. God chooses to do His mighty works through people, but if they don't have His power upon their lives, He cannot do mighty works. If you truly want God to do something mighty through your life and ministry, you need to spend time in prayer getting His power upon your life.
