Proverbs 25:28
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Your spirit is critical to living a victorious Christian life. If I am going to live the victorious Christian life, I must protect my spirit at all costs. Proverbs 18:14 teaches, The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? Every day, Satan bombards our spirit with things that can destroy it because he knows if our spirit is destroyed, he has defeated our ability to live a victorious Christian life. Our spirit is bombarded with hardships, negativity, battles from within and without, and with our own fears of what might happen as we face hard times. I have learned in life that, if I am going to live the victorious Christian life so that I can be a great witness for Christ, I must protect my spirit. Let me share several things that I do to protect my spirit.
First, I spend time in God's Word at the onset of the day. You will never protect your spirit without feeding your spirit the daily nourishment from God's Word. God's Word has a way of building and nourishing your spirit for the day. I personally read Scriptures daily from the Old Testament and New Testament, a chapter from the book of Proverbs corresponding to the day, and a few chapters from the book of Psalms. I have found that reading this amount of Scripture daily helps me to get the strength to fight against those things that try to destroy my spirit.
Second, I spend time in prayer at the beginning of the day. I don't wait until the end of the day to spend time in prayer because I need God to be with me at the very beginning. Don't get me wrong, I do pray throughout the day, but praying at the beginning of the day allows me to walk with the God who will protect my spirit. You will never have the power to protect your spirit from the daily onslaught of Satan's fiery darts if you don't spend time with God in prayer to have Him shield your spirit from the day’s negativity.
Third, I protect my spirit by getting things done daily. I know this sounds strange, but I have found that accomplishing several tasks daily helps me to have a good spirit. Satan will often use the uncompleted tasks to defeat us by making us think that we are not accomplishing anything. You will do yourself a great favor by creating a list of tasks that you need to accomplish that day, and start at the top of that list, completing each task and checking it off as you go. If you make the task at the top of that list a smaller task, you will find that completing it sets the mindset for the remainder of the day, which will help you maintain a positive spirit as you continue to work through your list of tasks.
Fourth, I protect my spirit by protecting my intake of information. Whether it’s social media or negative people, I do not allow them to dictate what information I get. You've got to protect the intake of information if you are going to live on the positive side of life. Keeping my spirit on the positive side of life is more important than knowing the trash from the sleaze media feeders.
Fifth, I protect my spirit by yielding to the Holy Spirit. If you yield continually to the Holy Spirit throughout the day, you will find that He will be in control of your spirit, which will allow you to stay on the top side of life despite the negative you face. The Holy Spirit is the shield around your spirit that repels the negativity of the day; therefore, yield to Him, and you will have a victorious spirit.
