Song of Solomon 5:16
His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
The bride talks about the mouth of her husband being most sweet. She did not say that it was sweet, but most sweet. The sweetness of his mouth was sweeter to this bride than anything else. Of all the things that were sweet to this bride, the mouth of her husband was at the top of the list as most sweet.
This verse is talking about the words of her husband. She was saying that what he said to her was most sweet. This bride never lost the delight in hearing him talk. She loved hearing her husband talk to her, and when he talked to her she considered his words as most sweet.
When you look at this passage, you must compare it to God and His Word. God’s Word ought to be most sweet to every believer. There ought to be an awe and respect when we hear God’s Word being read in church and in private. There ought to be something about the hearing of God’s Word that makes it most sweet to every believer.
One of the keys to a happy Christian life is to keep God‘s words that He speaks sweet, whether through His Word or in the preaching. How do we do this? Proverbs 27:7 shows us, The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. Notice, to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. The key to keeping God’s Word sweet is to stay hungry. You stay hungry by giving out what you have taken in. You can only take in so much of God’s Word until you are no longer hungry for it. At some point, you must give out what has been given to you. There are three ways you can give out God’s Word.
First, go soul winning. The more you go soul winning, the more you will be hungry to learn God’s Word. Many have found a great hunger for God’s Word so they can answer those who they witness to in the harvest. As you labor to go soul winning, you are giving out what has been given to you. I have been soul winning for nearly five decades, and my hunger for God’s Word is greater today than ever. When God gives me something from His Word daily, it is most sweet to the taste of my soul. You will find that soul winning has a way of keeping God’s Word sweet to your spiritual taste, and hungry to learn more from Him.
Second, spiritually invest in others. When you make your life about helping others to grow, you will find the hunger for God’s Word becomes immense. Invest in others by working in a bus route. Invest in others by taking them soul winning with you. You will find that as you invest in others, you will give out what you know, making you hungry for God to give you more from His Word.
Third, become a teacher of God’s Word. There are many places you can teach God’s Word. You can teach His Word in a Sunday school class, a nursing home, on a bus route, or in a Bible club for children. If you teach God’s Word, you will find a hunger to learn more so you can give those you teach more of God’s Word. I have found the more I give out of what I learn, the more God gives me from His Word. The more I give out of God’s Word by teaching, the hungrier I become for His Word. God’s Word will be most sweet to you when you become hungry from laboring in God’s service.
