1 Timothy 6:17-18

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

Some have the philosophy that money itself is evil, but that is not what the Scriptures teach. The Scriptures teach in 1 Timothy 6:10, For the love of money is the root of all evil… Notice that God says the love of money is what is the root of all evil. When you love money is when you will do anything to get it. When you love money is when you will hurt people for the sake of getting it. You will notice that God continues in this verse to say, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Notice that the love of money causes people to err from the faith and end up living in sorrows. When money becomes the love of your life, you will do whatever it takes to get it, including erring from the faith.

In the verses above, God gives those who have money the perspective they are to have concerning it. If you don't keep a proper perspective concerning money, you will end up loving money and erring from the faith. Let us look at the perspectives God says we should have concerning money.

First, do not be highminded concerning money. In other words, don't think that you are better than those who don't have money. Money does not make you a great Christian or a better person than others. Many have erred from the faith because they became proud about their ability to earn money and forgot that God is the One who gave the money to them. When you keep a right perspective that God is the One who blesses you with money, you will never become a person who is highminded and looks down on others.

Second, don't trust your wealth, but trust God. One of the great mistakes that those who have money make is that they lose their trust in God because they have much wealth. Let me remind you that God can take wealth away as quickly as He has given it to you. Our trust is to always be in God no matter how much money we make. The person who is wealthy is to trust God, as well as the person who is poor. You must keep your perspective concerning money right if you will keep your trust in the right place.

Third, God gave you money to help others. Never become selfish with what God has given to you. This does not mean that you need to spend all your money on others, but God gave you money to be able to help those who are in great need. God will bless you if you use your money to help others in their time of need.

Fourth, use your money to lay up treasures in Heaven. The greatest investment you can make with your money is in the souls of mankind. Invest in soul-winning ministries and missions. It may look as if you are not getting any return from your investment, but your return will come in Heaven. Never let the accumulation of wealth cause you to spend it on yourself. There is nothing wrong with spending money on yourself, but it would be better to use your money to invest in reaching the souls of mankind. God will always bless those who invest financially in His harvest the most. Keeping a proper perspective of money will help you to keep God first and to never allow money-making opportunities to keep you from serving Him.
