Luke 10:19
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
God’s power is always given to do something. Throughout the Scriptures, you will find God’s power is given to do the works of God and not for sitting in the pew to do nothing. In the verse above, Jesus said that He gave power to His disciples to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Isaiah 61:1-3 says that God gave power to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. You will notice that God’s power is to do and never to hold.
God’s power is more about flowing through you than it is to hold inside of you. God does not give you power to be a capacitor to hold, but He gives His power to be a conduit to do works that you cannot do by yourself. Now, if you are to have God’s power on your life, that means there are two things you must do to get it.
First, you must do God’s works to have God’s power. Everything you do in life should be for God to work through you. You should need God’s power to work on the job because you are doing that work to be a testimony for God. You should need God’s power to raise your children because you are raising them to serve Him. There is no need for God’s power if you are not doing a God-work that needs His power. The person who never goes soul winning does not need God’s power. The preacher who is not preaching to help the church reach the harvest does not need the power of God to preach because He is not preaching for the purpose for which God tells Him to preach. Many preachers go into the pulpit powerless, not because they are not decent men, but because they are not doing anything to reach the lost. Preacher, if your highlight is to preach outside meetings and not to reach the lost, you need to get your priorities straight. You need God’s power because we are commissioned to reach the lost. The Christian needs God’s power as a bus worker so they can reach more people for Christ. The Sunday school teacher should need God’s power because they are trying to reach the lost or stir those they teach to reach the lost. You don't need God’s power if you are not doing a work for God.
Second, you must attempt faith works to have God’s power. There is no need for God’s power if everything you do is within your abilities. One of the biggest reasons God commands the believer to live by faith is because faith causes you to do things that are beyond your abilities. Faith is stepping out beyond what you are capable of doing. When you step out beyond your capabilities is when you need God’s power to do it. God’s power has always rested on those who step out beyond their abilities by faith to do something great for God. You will never find those living a comfortable Christian life having the power of God. The faith life requires the power of God, because the faith life is a life that is attempting to do something beyond your abilities.
