Nahum 1:3
The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
God’s sovereignty in your life will always be seen in the storms that you face. Though we do not like the storms, storms are often the way that God shows His power in your life to make out of you the jewel that He intends for you to be. In the most chaotic and turbulent times of life, you can be assured that the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm. Let me point out three things this phrase means.
First, it means the LORD is with you in the storms. Life’s storms can leave us feeling abandoned or overwhelmed. Yet Nahum 1:3 reminds us that the LORD is not distant in our struggles; He is present. The whirlwind and storm are not beyond His reach or control; in fact, they are under His dominion. His ways are higher than ours, and even in what appears destructive or chaotic, He is working for His glory and our good. As Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. No matter how fierce the storm, the LORD walks with us through it. You may not see the LORD in your storm, but you can be assured He is there as He promises to be there.
Second, the LORD has a way for your life in the storms. Storms often disrupt our plans, but they do not change God’s purposes for your life. In fact, they are part of His way for our lives. The winds that seem to threaten our safety are the very instruments through which He molds our character and strengthens our faith. When we encounter hardships, we are invited to trust that God is guiding us through uncharted waters toward His perfect plan. His way may not always be what we expect, but it is always what we need. As Romans 8:28 assures, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Third, the LORD will bring you to yield to His way in the storms. The ultimate goal of the storms in our lives is surrender. God desires to bring us to a place where we let go of our plans and trust His ways entirely. Storms have a way of humbling us, stripping us of self-reliance, and directing our focus upward. It is in the place of surrender that we can truly experience the peace and purpose of God. When Jonah fled from God’s call, the LORD used a storm to redirect him to Nineveh. Likewise, the storms in our lives are opportunities to realign our will with God’s.
My friend, yield to the LORD’s way in the storms, and you will always make it through them. Victory in the storm comes not through resistance, but through submission. Yielding to God’s way means trusting Him, even when the path seems unclear or the winds are relentless. When we submit to His leading, He guides us safely through the tempest. As Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm. Trust God, embrace His purpose, and yield to His plan. Remember the LORD knows the way through the storms, all you have to do is follow, and as you follow, you will see that He will guide you to become something you never thought was possible in your life.
