The Power of Do

1 Samuel 2:35

And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

Two words are critical to what God is looking for in every believer; these words are faithful and do. Because of Eli’s unfaithfulness to carry out the office of the high priest, God said that He would raise up a faithful priest, that shall do. God was interested in someone being faithful to Him, but the only way this person could be faithful was through doing.

I am afraid that we have become a generation of believers who think feeling spiritual is more important than the doing of right. If there is one area where we need a great revival today it is in the area of doing. When I say doing, I am not talking about doing right one day a week or a couple hours within the week, but I am talking about having a revival of doing right all day and every day.

God is as much interested in the believer doing right as He is in the hearing of right. It is not enough just to hear right, but the believer is to do what he hears. James 1:22 says, But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Notice that God emphasizes the doing of His Word and not just the hearing of His Word.

3 John 1:11 says, Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. Notice that knowing good is not what makes a person of God, but the doing of good is what makes them of God.

1 John 3:7 says, Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. You are not righteous because you don't do wrong; you are righteous because you do right. Righteousness is not in the not doing of wrong but in the doing of right.

My friend, many hear and don't do, but it is those who do that make the difference. For instance, you can hear the Gospel every day, but if you don't do what the Gospel tells you to do, you will go to Hell. Nobody has ever been saved by just hearing the Gospel; they were saved by doing what the Gospel tells them to do. There will be many hearers of the Gospel in Hell because they did not do what the Gospel commanded them to do to be saved.

God is interested in people doing what He tells them to do and not in just hearing it. Yes, you need to hear what is right, but you need to do what you hear if you are to be obedient to God. You can stop doing wrong, but you are still wrong if you don't do right. Those who don't do wrong are as wrong as those who do wrong if they don't do right. It is in the doing that makes you right.

Greatness is not found in sitting, but in doing. Give me the person who is not completely what they need to be but are doing what they are supposed to do, and I will show you a person who will become what they are supposed to be. It is in the doing that you become what you are supposed to be and not just in the hearing. Let me ask: are you doing in the work of the LORD? Are you soul winning? Are you involved in ministry? What can you write down that you are doing? The great church is not the church that is just filled with hearers of the Word but with doers of the Word as well. You will get God’s attention if you will be faithful at doing right.
