Genesis 32:24

And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

The alone time of a person is the truest test of who they truly are. It does not matter what you portray yourself to be in public, but you are what you are in private. It does not matter what you are on the platform; it only matters what you are when you are alone. It matters not what you tell others that you are; it only matters what goes on in your heart and mind when you are alone.

The crack in someone’s character is often revealed when they are alone. David and Elijah saw the crack in their character when they were alone. Both of these men were great men, but they discovered where their character lacked when they were alone. Though Jacob had many character flaws, he improved his character when he was alone. It was when he was alone that he wrestled with God and obtained His blessings on his life. Five things you will find out about yourself when you are alone.

First, you will find out what your character is like when you are alone. It is easy to have good character when you are in a place of good character, but your true character is revealed in your alone time. Whatever you do when nobody sees what you are doing is the truest revelation of your character.

Second, you will find out what your faith is like when you are alone. Your faith often comes under attack when you are alone. It is easy to talk about a strong faith when you are in front of people, but you show me what your faith is like and how much doubt controls your life when you are alone, and I will show you what your faith is like. The faith of a believer is revealed in their heart when there is no preacher to challenge their faith, no leader to encourage them to go forward, and when they are alone to listen to the doubts of their heart. The truest strength of your faith is determined by the doubts you have and act upon when you are alone.

Third, you will find out what you believe when you are alone. When the crowd threatens to leave you is what determines what you truly believe. If you are not willing to stand alone for what you believe, you don't truly believe what you say you do. Many have braggadociously said they believed something but have done the opposite when the crowd threatened to attack or leave them. It is what you believe when all your friends have left you that determines what you truly believe.

Fourth, you will find out what your prayer life is like when you are alone. It does not matter how you pray in public that determines your prayer life, but how you pray when you are alone, that is the truest revelation of your prayer life. It is easy to pray boldly and eloquently when praying in front of others, but show me how you pray when God is your only audience, and I will show you your true prayer life. Show me how much and how long you pray when you are alone, and I will show you your true prayer life.

My friend, it is when you are alone that you will find the power of God. In Matthew 14:23, Jesus prayed alone, and it was immediately after this time of prayer that He walked on the water and calmed the storms. You will only find God’s power in your alone time. What you are when you are alone, and how much time you spend begging God for His power when you are alone will determine God’s power on your life.
