Deuteronomy 20:4

For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Many are looking for God in the wrong place. They wonder where God is in hard times, and yet He is always where He has always been. God never changes. Psalm 15:4 promises, In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. If God changeth not, then we are promised that where He was in the lives of those in the past He is still in the same place in our lives. Let me share three places where you will always find God.

First, you will find that God goes before you. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. The fact that God goes before me gives me the assurance that God has already been where I am going. There is no surprise to God about what you are facing today. He is the Scout Who goes before you to see what is ahead and how to avoid the dangers that you are about to encounter. You will always be safe as long as you follow God, for He promised that He doth go before thee.

Second, you will find that God goes behind you. Psalm 139:5 shows us, Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Why would God go behind us? The answer is found when the children of Israel faced the Red Sea. The pillar of cloud that they followed moved behind them to keep the Egyptian army from attacking them from behind. Isaiah 52:12 promises, …for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward. The rereward are the troops that look for the enemy that attacks from behind. The rereward keeps you safe as you move forward. This is critical to the believer because all of the armour that God gives to the believer only covers the front. God is saying that He will protect your backside if you will keep moving forward in the battle. It matters not how deceitful Satan may be in trying to attack you; you are assured that God not only knows where you are going, but He is also guarding you from the back to keep Satan from hurting you. This means there is no need for the believer to look back because God is your rereward.

Third, you will find that God goes with you. Deuteronomy 20:4 promises, For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you…. What a promise! God goes with us to fight against the enemy. The God that goes before you to warn you about the impending dangers, and the God that goes behind you to protect you from the deceitfulness of the enemy, He also goes with you to fight for you as you go forward by faith.

Here is the great promise that every believer can hold onto: …I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5). God’s promise that He will never leave you means that He will always be before you, behind you, and with you. As long as you keep going forward by faith, you are always assured of God’s presence in your life.

My friend, it matters not if you feel that He is with you; He promised to be with you in all of these areas, and His promise means that He is with you. When you don't feel God’s presence, it might be because He has moved ahead or behind to protect you from that which is trying to hurt you. You can rest assured that God is before you, behind you, and with you as long as you keep moving forward by faith.
