Always a Light for Truth

Genesis 5:28-29

And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

Every generation always has a light that shines truth, which means that no generation has an excuse for compromise. The generations of Noah reveal one great truth: there is always a light for every generation. Let me explain. Adam was alive when Enoch was born. Enoch was the man who walked with God and was not because God took him to Heaven. However, Lamech was Enoch’s grandson, and he had to learn how to live right from his grandfather. Hold on, Noah was the son of Lamech. When you look at this timeline, it is interesting that Noah was the only one who found grace in the eyes of the LORD. How did Noah know what to do in a generation that compromised truth? He knew because Lamech passed the truth given to him from Enoch down to Noah.

Here is what is interesting. Enoch had to hear Adam talk about the Garden of Eden and the importance of obeying God. All the other people born in that day did not walk with God, but Enoch did. When Adam died, Enoch was that man who carried the light of truth and taught Lamech how to live and do right. When Enoch died, Lamech was that man who carried the light of truth, and I believe that is how Noah learned how to find grace in the eyes of the LORD. Several lessons can be learned from this truth.

First, every generation has a light for truth that shines, which means, no generation has an excuse to compromise. God always has a tie to someone from the previous generation who carried the light of truth, and it is critical that you get around that one and learn from them.

Second, the impact of passing the heritage of truth is more significant than you will ever know. Though there were thousands of people who sat under each of these three men, only three men are what kept the heritage alive for Noah to learn it. Adam likely never knew that telling the truth to each generation would one day result in Noah being the only voice of truth in his day. You may think you are wasting your time because of so many compromising truth, but all it takes is for one person to grasp the torch of truth and carry it to another generation so that truth will be perpetuated to every generation.

Third, you hold a great responsibility not to compromise what has been handed to you. The fact that you have heard from those who saw God work in a great way lays a great responsibility on your shoulders not only to tell the next generation what you saw, but to show the next generation how it is done. The power of example is often the greatest example that the old paths work in every generation. You have seen what works and what has been handed to you, so instead of criticizing the past, carry on the truth they taught.

Fourth, it only takes one link to the torch of truth not passing on the truth for that light to go out. Now, I believe God always has at least one voice that will carry on the truth in every generation, but I would hate to be the one that quenches that light to those I influence because I refuse to pass on the truth handed to me. Instead of picking apart the sins of past generations, you would be wise to pass on the heritage of truth they gave to you so that those you influence know what the light of truth is all about.
