Eternal Security is More than Eternal Security

John 10:28

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

The eternal security of the believer is certainly one of the most important doctrines in God's Word. Eternal security means that once I accept Christ as my personal Saviour, I am saved forever. I do not get saved one day and lose my salvation in the next, but I got saved and I am saved forever. Eternal security means that no matter what I do, my salvation is secure forever. Why is my salvation secure forever? It is secure because Christ paid for all sins, meaning that my salvation is secure no matter what I do. Eternal security does not mean that God won't chasten me, but what it does mean is that I know my salvation is secure until I get to Heaven.

However, eternal security is more than just the eternal security of my salvation. I believe we often only view eternal security through the viewpoint of salvation, but I want to point you to eternal security through the viewpoint of the Christian life. You will notice that when a person gets saved, they are placed into the hand of the Father. Not only are we in the hand of the Father, but we were also in the hand of Jesus Christ. Then, the Scripture reminds us that God the Father and God the Son are One, which means I am in the hand of the Trinity. Let me share several things that eternal security means to the believer’s life after salvation.

First, I am in the Father’s hand. Eternal security guarantees my relationship with God the Father. The security of knowing that the Father is my heavenly Father means that I can talk to Him at any time. A child always has a right to talk to their father, no matter what is going on in life. The fact that I am saved eternally guarantees my right to pray to my heavenly Father at any time.

Second, I am secure from everything life throws at me. Verse 29 says that the Father is greater than all. No matter what trials I face in life, I am secure from the trials hurting my life because I am in the hand of the Father, and He is greater than all. No matter what you face in life, eternal security should give you the encouragement that you can make it through any trial because you are in the Father’s hand.

Third, I am secure from anything man tries to do to me. Verse 29 continues to say that no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. Man can threaten you, but you are safe in the Father’s hand. Man can try to destroy you, but you are safe in the Father’s hand. Man can try to stop you, but because you are in the Father’s hand, you are guaranteed that they are fighting, not against you, but against the Father. The one great comfort I take about being in my Father’s hand is that no matter what man may try to do to me, they are not fighting against me, but they are fighting against my Father.

Fourth, I find life in Jesus Christ. Jesus promised that He gives us eternal life. Eternal life is more than just living forever, but it is also where you find true enjoyment in life. You will never find true enjoyment of life outside of living for Jesus Christ. This is one of the great mistakes many believers make: they try to find enjoyment in life through money, possessions, and worldly activities, when in fact, enjoyment of life is found in Jesus Christ. My friend, Christ saved you and gave you eternal life; stop seeking enjoyment in life in something other than in Jesus Christ. If you will live for Christ, you will find that the eternal life Christ gave you at salvation is also when you find enjoyment and fulfillment in life.
