And They Followed Him

Matthew 20:34

So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

We look at Jesus’ ministry, and it is obvious that people followed Him. The following Jesus had with such a short ministry is incredible. His ministry lasted three years. He had no church building for people to come to hear Him preach. He had no college education. He was not part of the religious in-crowd. His staff was considered the ignorant of their day. He had no social media to get His message out. He had no podcast to get people to follow Him. Yet, the Scriptures say that people followed Jesus; not just a few people followed Him, but multitudes followed him. In fact, we see that thousands followed Jesus.

There is a reason people followed Him that could help every believer to get people to follow them. Oh, we don't need people to follow us because of who we are, but we need people to follow us so they can meet the Saviour. People will never follow Jesus until they first follow a person who follows Jesus. It takes people like you to lead for people to eventually follow Jesus. However, several things Jesus did are necessary if people are to follow you so you can get them to follow Jesus.

First, have a message that will help them. Jesus had a message that helped those He led. The Gospel message is a message that will help any person. God has given you a message, but that message will do no good if you don't preach that message. People will never follow you if you don't put the message out that will help them.

Second, you must have a compassion for their needs. Nobody wants to follow a self-centered individual. You must take your eyes off yourself and get among the multitudes if you will have a compassion for people, a compassion that will cause them to follow you. People will be more willing to follow you when they see that you truly care for them. However, having a compassion for people means you must be there for them in their time of need.

Third, you must be touchable for people to follow you. If believers stopped acting like untouchable CEOs and be touchable to those they lead, they might find they can make a difference in lives. Jesus did not lead the people from a distance; He led them by being among them. People want to touch the one who leads them. If you are not accessible to those you lead, you will find those you lead will stop following. We can't make people follow us, but we can be touchable so they will want to follow us.

Fourth, you must have a vision for them. People love following someone with a great vision. If you have no vision for them, there is no reason for them to follow you. What kind of vision do you have for those you lead? You should have a vision for them that they cannot see, but have the ability to mold them to the point they can see the vision you have for them. You are leading people nowhere if you have no vision for their lives.

Fifth, you must have a power they do not have. People will follow someone who can accomplish something they feel they cannot do. The power any leader can have is the power of the Holy Ghost on their lives. If you are empowered by the Holy Ghost, you will find people will want to follow you to see His power work through you to do the miraculous.
