And They Overcame Him

Revelation 12:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

We are in a battle against Satan, a battle that can be won if we follow the methods that God gives to fight him. We must understand that Satan is not omnipotent, which means that we, as believers, can win this battle. God shows us in the book of Revelation how to overcome Satan. He says that they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they love not their lives until the death. Let me share what this means.

First, they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb. There are two meanings of this little phrase. The first meaning is that they overcame him by getting saved. The day that you got saved is the first battle that you won over Satan; now you ought to live the rest of your Christian life victoriously over him. God did not save you to be a loser, but to be a winner, and you can only win through the blood of the Lamb. We did not win this battle through our own works, but we won it through the blood of Jesus Christ. We will only be able to say that we won in this battle of eternity for our soul by accepting Christ’s shed blood as the only payment for our sins.

However, there is a second meaning to this phrase. Because the blood of the Lamb is applied to our account, we have the power to go to our Heavenly Father and pray. In other words, I am overcoming Satan every time I pray. You cannot live the victorious Christian life without a consistent prayer life. Every failure in life is a prayer failure. You can overcome Satan every day of your life through the blood of the Lamb, which is through prayer. Prayer is the one key that allows the believer to win any battle that they face.

Second, they overcame Satan by the word of their testimony. How you live your life is critical to defeating Satan. Satan is the accuser of the brethren, and the only thing he can use against you is what you do that is wrong. None of us are sinless, but we can keep a good testimony if we consistently keep a short account with God by confessing our sin immediately to God and start doing right. A good testimony is critical to overcoming Satan. A victorious testimony that Satan cannot use against you is that you do right more than you do wrong.

Third, they overcame Satan by not fearing death. These people would rather have died than to live for the world. If there is no passion in your Christian walk, you will have a difficult time overcoming Satan. Your focus must be on Heaven and on the judgment seat of Christ if you are going to overcome Satan. Your mindset must be that you will do right and fulfill God's will for your life, or you will die trying to do it. This is the mindset it takes to overcome Satan.

However, the key phrase in overcoming Satan is, and they overcame him. To overcome as a choice. To overcome is to will yourself to overcome him. My friend, if you don't choose to overcome Satan, you will never overcome him. God has placed inside of you a will to choose to overcome Satan. In other words, determination must be a major part of your Christian walk. You cannot overcome Satan if you don't determine to overcome him. Overcoming is not easy, but it can be done. When you determine that you will overcome anything Satan throws your way, you have taken the first step in defeating Satan’s attacks against you.
