Good and Faithful Servant

Mathew 25:21

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

We have all heard of the parable of the talents and how the lord commended two servants and not the one. The commendation of the two servants tells the believer much about what they are supposed to be for God. Every believer should desire to hear the words from their Saviour, Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Just as a child longs to hear their parents commend them for accomplishments, so the child of God should have a greater desire to hear their Heavenly Father commend them for being a good and faithful servant.

Three words in this phrase are the key to being what you should be for God. The first word is servant. There is no shame in being a servant for God. Being a servant for God simply means you are being a good steward of the life God gave you. I so badly want to make the most of my life because God gave me a life to live. However, there is only one way I can make the most of my life and that is by being a servant of God. Anyone who flinches at being a servant of God only reveals that they are serving their flesh. As a believer, you are either serving God or your flesh. Serving the flesh results in a life filled with corruption, but serving God fills a life with eternal blessings you can take to Heaven.

The second word is good. Good is not just the absence of bad, but it is the doing of right. Psalm 55:3 explains good when it says, Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Good is an action. I’m not good because I don’t do things, but I’m good because I do right. You don’t overcome evil by not doing evil, but you overcome evil with good; that is doing that which is good. You can stop all the bad in your life and still not be good, because good is in the action of doing right. The best way to stop the bad is by the doing of good. It is wonderful to be a servant, but I must do right as a servant to be a good servant.

The third word is faithful. The ruler pointed out to this servant, thou hast been faithful. God is looking for faithfulness. Faithfulness is what makes you a good steward of God. God wants us to be faithful over several things. God wants His servants to simply be faithful. Faithful is showing up. Faithful is not looking for a reason to miss, but finding a way when it is difficult to show up. Being faithful means the leader is never concerned if you will be there, because you are faithful. Anyone can be faithful because faithfulness is a decision to show up every time despite ANY circumstance.

Moreover, being faithful is caring for the little things of life. Being faithful to what some would call unimportant is what makes you a faithful servant. Anyone can show up to church on the big days, but the faithful servant of God shows up for every church service. It is often the little things in life that make the greatest impact, and God is looking for His servants to be faithful in those little things.

The key to getting God’s commendation is being all three: a servant, a good servant, and faithful. Some are good but not faithful. Some are faithful but not good. Some are good and faithful, but to be a servant of God who will get His commendation is to be a good and faithful servant.
