Revelation 3:21
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Seven times in Revelation 2 and 3, you will find the phrase, to him that overcometh. God is teaching the believer seven things they must fight and overcome in their walk with Him. The Christian walk is a battle, and the battle is not easy, but you must fight to overcome these things if you are to live the victorious Christian life. The seven things you must overcome: keeping a zeal for soul winning, trials and persecution, compromising the faith, keep working for God, not throwing out your heritage, not changing God’s Word, and a lukewarm or indifferent heart. Every believer will fight these seven things, but God has a reward for those who overcome these things. Let me share several thoughts about overcoming in these areas that will help you be part of the crowd that overcometh.
First, overcometh means the Christian life is a battle. There are days that will seem to be easy in the Christian life, but there will also be days when you must fight not to succumb to these seven things. Too many treat the Christian life as a walk through the park only to find out the battle overcomes them. Every day you must bring to mind that today there will be a battle you must overcome if you are to overcome these battles.
Second, if God commands you to overcome these things, He gives you the wherewithal to do it. Because God tells you to overcome these things means that you can overcome them. It does not matter how overwhelmed you are; you are able through Christ’s strength to overcome these battles. There will be days when you feel like you are going to break, but always remember that God promises not to allow more to be put on you than what you can bear.
Third, you rarely fight all battles at one time, but you will fight a battle. There are days when you will only fight one battle, but there will be days when you are fighting more than one of these battles. You may win a battle today, but you must realize that a new battle will come tomorrow. The word overcometh means the battles never stop coming, but the good news is that God’s power to overcome these battles is always greater than any battle you face.
Fourth, you must overcome before you are a person who overcometh. Overcometh means you will continually fight these things until the day you die. There is no excuse to let the battle overcome you because the God who lives within you is greater than any battle you will ever face.
Fifth, overcoming is a choice. You can overcome sin and trials if you choose to overcome. The only person who does not overcome is the one who quits trying. You are the one who decides whether or not you will overcome. There are three things you must do if you are to overcome.
First, you must read God’s Word daily. God’s Word is the sword you use to fight the battles from within and from without. You will fail to overcome if you don't read God’s Word daily. Second, you must pray daily. Every person who has been overcome has stopped praying. Prayer is the tool that rallies the forces of Heaven to help you overcome the flesh, the world, and sin. Third, you overcome through the power of the Holy Ghost. Yield to the Spirit daily and beg for His filling, and by His power you will be one who overcometh.
