Deuteronomy 32:7
Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.
In the days of Moses’ life, he commanded Israel to remember the days of old. Moses understood the importance of history and how it can teach and motivate us to realize that the God of the past is still God today, and has the power to do today what He did in the past. Moses knew the likelihood of Israel continuing to do right when he was in Heaven was very slim. However, if they would remember the days of old, they could continue to see God work in their country in the mighty ways that He did through Moses’ ministry.
We live in times when most are trying to destroy the days of old instead of using those days as a model of how to get God to do the miraculous works in our day. Many are prone to criticize those whom God used mightily instead of embracing their lives and ministries as a model of how to live and minister today. When Moses said to remember the days of old, he knew that, in his own life and those in the past, there were things they did that should not be copied; however, on the whole, what God did through their lives should be modeled after so that God can do great things today. Let me point out four things from the days of old I believe God wants us to remember.
First, remember the Book of the days of old. Moses wanted Israel to remember how they got God’s Word. He wanted them to remember that God preserved His Word on earth by giving it to Moses for the people to have an inspired and preserved Word of God. The same Word of God that God gave Moses is still inspired and preserved for us today through the King James Bible. We must never forget that the God who preserved His inspired Word for Moses promised to preserve His inspired Word for every generation, and He has through the King James Bible. The King James Bible is as inspired and preserved as was the Word of God given to Moses; never forget we have God’s Word today.
Second, remember the methods of old. The methods of preaching, soul winning, bus ministry, music, Sunday school, and church building ought to be done today in our ministries. These methods of the past still work today if we will do them. God’s methods are not confined to an era, but they will work in every generation if we will remember the methods of old and do them.
Third, remember the miracles of old. The same God that built great churches in the past can build great churches today. The God who performed miracles for those before us can still perform miracles today. Remembering the miracles of old will stir us to be courageous enough to step out by faith as the men of the past did so that God can do the same miracles in our churches by reaching the thousands if we will just live by faith and attempt the miraculous.
Fourth, remember God’s power of old. The same God who empowered men like Dr. Lee Roberson, Dr. Jack Hyles, Dr. Dallas Billington, and others can empower us today if we will do the works that need His power, and spend the time in prayer as these men did to get God’s power. God’s power for the past is for you today if you will beg for it and attempt the impossible so that God sees your need to have His power on your life.
