Salvation’s Simplicity

John 4:14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

One of the battles we continue to fight is to keep salvation as simple as Jesus did. Jesus gives several illustrations of the simplicity of salvation. Jesus made salvation simple because He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) Jesus made salvation simple so that even the child who understands they are a sinner can be saved. Jesus made salvation simple so that the sinner who is steeped in sin can accept this simple salvation.

How simple is salvation? Salvation is as simple as receiving something. God likens salvation to a gift in Romans 6:23, …the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus wants people to be saved, and they can be saved if they will just receive the gift of salvation. John 1:12 says, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: It is not hard to receive anything. To receive something, all you have to do is accept it. Jesus offers salvation, so all a sinner has to do is receive it as it is, and the moment they receive it they become a child of God.

How simple is salvation? Salvation is as easy as drinking water. Jesus said, whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;. It is not hard to drink a glass of water. All I have to do is pour the water into my mouth, and I am drinking it. All a sinner has to do is to drink the water of salvation as it is and they will be saved. Salvation is not difficult because Christ did the difficult part of paying for salvation with His blood and life.

Notice several things about salvation’s simplicity. First, salvation is not difficult. Salvation is easy to understand and easy to accept. The believer must be careful about making salvation more difficult than it is. When you explain salvation to the lost, don't be complex in your delivery of the simple Gospel. The Gospel is simple, but the Gospel is also powerful enough to save any sinner who accepts it in its simplicity.

Second, salvation is immediate. If salvation is as simple as drinking a glass of water, that means it immediately saves the one who accepts it. They don't have to continue to work to keep it because they already have it all when they accept it.

Third, salvation is eternal. Jesus said, whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst. Never to thirst means you will never have to drink of it again. In other words, once you get saved, you will always be saved. You don't have to drink it and drink it again; all it takes is to take salvation one time, and you will NEVER have to take it again.

Fourth, salvation is bountiful. Jesus says when one drinks of His water, He shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The great thing about salvation is that it gets better the longer you have it. You can never lose it because salvation pays for all sin. However, always remember that the first day of salvation is the worst day of salvation because it gets better as the days go on.

My friend, salvation is for anyone. Jesus says, whosoever drinketh of the water. Let me challenge you to be the carrier of the water of salvation to every person, for whosoever drinks of Christ’s salvation will be saved.
