1 Chronicles 2:7
And the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed.
Achan’s life will forever be remembered because of his rebellion against God’s Word. God said to totally destroy everything in the city of Jericho, but his greed got the best of him. However, what he took did not just affect him; it affected his family and country. The moment Achan took that which God said was to be destroyed was the moment he became accursed. The word accursed means to be under condemnation. This curse affected many lives and caused his nation to lose favor with God.
Was there anything wrong with the Babylonish garment or the gold and silver that he took? No. However, the moment God said everything was to be destroyed was the moment it became a curse for anyone to take these. This is the same thing that happened in the Garden of Eden with the tree of knowledge of good and evil. That tree produced fruit; however, because God said not to eat the fruit of that tree, the fruit became a curse for anyone to eat it. There are four things God sets aside as His, and when anyone does not do with these four things that He tells them to do, they become accursed. Let me share these four things.
First, Sunday is God’s day, and anyone who does not attend the church services becomes accursed. Hebrews 10:25 admonishes the believer not to forsake the assembling of themselves with their church. The moment a person takes a job that keeps them out of church services is the moment they become accursed. The moment a person chooses not to assemble with the church because they just don't want to go is the moment they become accursed. It does not matter what their excuse is, not to assemble with their church as God commands makes them accursed.
Second, not paying your tithe makes you accursed. The tithe belongs to God, and not to pay it makes you no better than Achan — look at his ending. To rob God of the tithe is to bring a curse on your life. I would rather pay my tithe and not be cursed than rob the tithe to pay my bills and be accursed by God. You cannot rob God of that which is His and think that it won’t hurt your life.
Third, not paying offerings that God tells you to give makes you accursed. The offering is that which is above the tithe; it is that which God lays on your heart to give toward something above the tithe. If you have committed to giving something to God, or if God has told you to give a certain amount and you don't do it, you have made the same mistake of Achan resulting in being accursed.
Fourth, not obeying the calling of God makes you accursed. Romans 11:29 says, For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. The person who refuses to follow the call of God on their life has brought a curse on themselves. Your life becomes God’s when you surrender it to Him. Any part of your life not given to God will only bring a curse on you.
The worst thing about being accursed is that it not only affects you, but it affects your family and troubles your church. Don't be the troubler of your church and family. Be sure that what belongs to God you let Him have. There is nothing worth having that will cause you to be accursed of God. Let God have that which is His, and you will find His blessings instead of being accursed.
