Proverbs 4:1
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
Instruction is detailed information that is given by someone to tell or show us how to do something. Instructions come in many forms. It comes through books, a list of instructions, and it also comes from individuals who care enough to show us how to live or succeed in life.
We are commanded to hear the instruction of a father. Solomon was saying that he was not someone who did not have experience in life, but he was a father of children who wanted his children to do right. Solomon’s love was exhibited by his taking time to give his children detailed instructions on how to live and serve the LORD.
Instruction is critical to doing right. The fact that God gave us His Word shows us that He loves us enough to give us instructions on how to live, how to please Him, and how to make the most with our lives. The importance of instruction in one’s life is critical to several things.
First, instruction is important to knowing what to believe. Verse 2 says, For I give you good doctrine…. We will never know what to believe if we don't take the time to listen to instruction. The fact that someone doesn’t know what they believe is not a lack of instruction because we have God’s Word that instructs us if we would read it. Not only does a believer have God’s Word to instruct them, but they have the Holy Spirit who will guide them into all truth. No believer has an excuse for not knowing what they should believe. If they would read God’s Word, be yielded to the Holy Spirit, and studied the Scriptures as they are commanded, they would know what they are to believe.
Second, instruction is critical to obtaining God’s blessings on your life. Verse 2 continues to say, forsake ye not my law. God’s law are the rules and boundaries by which God commands the believer to live. As long as the believer lives within those boundaries, they will experience the blessings and favor of God. Nobody will ever know what the lines and boundaries by what they are to stay within without instruction.
Third, instruction is critical to keeping the right direction. Verse 11 says, I have taught the in the way of wisdom; I have let thee in right paths. Instruction gives you a direction and a path that you should walk so that you never stray from what God wants you to be.
Fourth, instruction heeded is what brings honor to one’s life. Verse 8 says, Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou does embrace her. Many want to live an honorable life and be revered by others, but they will never be able to do this if they don't heed instruction.
Instruction means nothing if you won't listen to it. My friend, instruction is critical to living a life without heartache. You will not know how to live if you are not in church or Sunday school when instruction is given. If you do not read God’s Word daily, you will never know how to find the benefits of instruction heeded. If you don't read good books by people who believe right, you cannot know the instruction that can help further you in life. If you want to enjoy life to its fullest, be a person who seeks instruction and listens carefully to it when it is being given.
