Lamentations 2:11
Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.
Jeremiah was greatly troubled for his country as he saw God’s judgment on it. Tears never stopped running down his face as he saw what God’s judgment did to his country. He was so troubled by what happened to his country that he became physically sick. He looked at his nation and was greatly troubled by what it had become.
However, Israel did not have to become a nation forsaken. She did not have to see God’s judgment. God had tried to warn this nation many times of what would happen, but they went their own way and tried their own methods of saving their nation to their failure. Had they done what God’s Word says to do to turn a nation around, Israel could have avoided God’s judgment.
How do you see the condition of your nation? As I look at America, I see a nation headed toward God’s judgment. America can continue to thumb its nose at God, but America needs to understand that God will not always strive with man. There comes a point when God will have had enough with this nation, and when that day comes, that will be a horrible day for this country.
However, I am one who believes that any nation can be saved. No, she will not be saved by which party controls the Presidency and Congress, but she will be saved if God’s people will do what is needed for God to withhold His judgment. Let me share four things needed to turn America away from God’s judgment.
First, confession and repentance is needed for America to be turned around. 2 Chronicles 7:14 makes it clear that God’s people are the ones who need to confess and repent of their sins. I am afraid God’s people want to blame society for the condition of their country when it is the disobedience of God’s people that has led to the condition of their country.
Second, prayer is needed for America to be turned around. 2 Chronicles 7:14 makes it clear that prayer is needed when it says, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray… No nation will be saved without God’s people praying for her healing. You can complain about the condition of your nation, but when was the last time you prayed for her? The greatest hope of any nation is that God’s people never stop praying for her.
Third, preaching is needed for America to be turned around. 1 Corinthians 1:21 says, …it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Preaching has always been a part of every great revival. The temple was built because of the preaching of Haggai and Zechariah. It was the preaching of Jonah that saved Nineveh from destruction. Old paths preaching is the only hope of stirring God’s people to do right so their nation will be saved.
Fourth, soul winning is needed for America to be turned around. The only thing that will change a nation's heart is to change its people's hearts, and the Gospel is the only thing that will change their hearts. You can start making a difference to turn your nation back to God by being a soul winner. If you truly love your nation, you will make it your responsibility to reach people for Christ.
