Abundantly Pardon

Isaiah 55:7

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

One of the most encouraging phrases in the Scriptures is that God will abundantly pardon. Now, let's look at these two words to understand what God did for us. The word pardon means a decision to forgive someone for a crime and remove some or all of the legal consequences of a conviction. In other words, in the eyes of the law, that person has never done wrong. When the Scriptures say that God will abundantly pardon, it is teaching that God is willing to completely wipe our record clean so that what we have done will no longer be held against us.

The Scriptures also say that God will abundantly pardon. The word abundantly means it is plentiful and never runs out. Abundantly means even more than this; it means that there is so much that it runs over the borders to others. In other words, God’s willingness to pardon is so abundant that it will affect those around us.

What a wonderful thought about our Saviour that He is willing to abundantly pardon the sinner from their sin. It matters not how bad a person is, God is powerful enough to abundantly pardon them. God’s grace is great enough to abundantly pardon the sinner. God’s blood is powerful enough to abundantly pardon any sinner no matter how vile the sinner is. God wants any person to know that whosoever comes to Him, He is willing to abundantly pardon them from all sin.

There is another truth that comes with the words abundantly pardon. God is still willing to abundantly pardon the child of God after they are saved. God is willing to move on after the child of God comes to Him to confess their sin to Him. 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God loves us so much and so desires to work with us in our lives that His willingness to pardon does not just apply to salvation, but it applies to the believer after salvation. There are two lessons we can take from God’s willingness to abundantly pardon.

First, no matter how far you have gone into sin as a believer, and no matter how far you have backslidden from God, He is willing to abundantly pardon you if you will confess your sin to Him. The God that pardoned you from your sin will not hold your sin against you if you will come to Him and confess your sin to Him. God forgiving you of sin is not IF God will forgive you, but IF you will confess your sin to Him. God is more than willing to forgive the believer of sin if they will humble themselves to confess their sin to Him. You don't have to ask God to forgive you to get His forgiveness; you just have to confess your sin to Him and He will forgive you.

Second, every believer ought to be willing to abundantly pardon others. If God is willing to abundantly pardon you from your sin and not hold against you what you have done, the least you can do is not to hold against others what they have done when they try to get right. God is willing to forgive the believer before they do wrong, and you should be willing to forgive others before they do you wrong. If you will have the forgiveness like God that will abundantly pardon, you will find God will use you to influence many people for good.
