How to Bear Trials

Allen Domelle

1 Corinthians 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

When God talks about temptation, He is talking about trials. God says every trial we face is common to man. In other words, someone else has faced or is facing what you are facing. Trials are not always easy to go through, but we have God’s promise that we can bear every trial we face. Let me share several principles about how to bear trials.

First, you are not the only one who has trials. The fact that trials are common to man means that others face trials as well. The martyr syndrome that you are the only one who has faced what you are facing is a self-centered mindset. Others have faced or are facing what you are going through, and they are making it. You have no excuse not to make it through your trials. If others have made it through what you are facing, that means you can make it too.

Second, your trial is heavy to bear. The fact that God promised He will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able means your trial is heavy to bear. Your trial is big to you. Whether you are a child, teenager, or an adult, everyone’s trials are heavy for them to bear. One mistake adults make concerning the trials that teens and children carry is that the trials that teens and children face are not that big. My friend, everyone’s trial is big to them. You may have already faced what teens and children are facing, but that does not minimize their trial being heavy for them to bear. The fact that you are going through a trial, no matter your age, means it is heavy to bear.

Third, God never allows your trials to be too heavy for you to bear. God promised He will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able. If God has allowed you to have your trial, it means that God KNOWS you can take it. You may feel your trial is too big for you, but if God allowed it, He knows you have the strength to bear it. God often allows our trials to take us to our breaking point, but He never allows them to take us beyond that point.

Fourth, you only make it through your trials by bearing them. Notice God says, that ye may be able to bear it. God did not say He would take it from us, but that He would give us the way to bear it. The only way through your trials is to carry them. God promises to give you the strength to carry your trial today. When tomorrow comes, God will also give you the strength to carry it tomorrow. You may think you can't carry today’s trial tomorrow, but tomorrow is not here; God expects you to carry it today, and He will give you the strength to bear it when tomorrow comes.

Now, how can we bear these heavy trials? God’s answer is in one phrase: make a way to escape. You carry the heavy trials by staying in the way. In other words, you carry trials by serving God. You cannot bear your trial if you sit and do nothing; you bear your trial by carrying it as you serve Him. God’s escape from your trial is to serve Him. When you get in the yoke of serving God, He helps you to carry that trial. That trial is too big for you to carry alone, but by serving God, you enter into His yoke to serve with Him, and He is the One who helps you to carry it, which keeps it from becoming too heavy for you to bear. Serve God, and you can bear your burdens.
